OTTAWA SUN (Ontario) 17 June 04 Award For Hopping To Frog Rescue
The 12-year-old president of the Clarence-Rockland-based Amphibian Conservation Club has won the 2004 Canadian Wildlife Federation Award.
Gabrielle Felio, who founded the club in 2002, will receive the award for her efforts to relocate frogs, tadpoles and other wildlife from an area on Petrie Island.
The area, on Trim Rd. north of Hwy. 174 in Ottawa's east end, is slated to be turned into a parking lot.
With help from the City of Ottawa, family, friends and other local groups, members of the ACC moved the wildlife to a protected area on Petrie Island last fall.
Gabrielle will receive the award during the CWF's awards banquet on June 19 in Kingston.
The ACC, an environmental group for kids aged nine-14, was started to help protect and conserve amphibians in the Ottawa area.
The club offers a variety of education sessions in which specimens from the Museum of Nature are brought in for display and study.
