VANCOUVER SUN (British Columbia) 01 September 05 Large green sea turtle flown to Vancouver Aquarium
Kitkatla (CP): Two cousins made an unusual discovery Tuesday as they encountered a large green sea turtle while out fishing.
"We picked it up out of the water, it didn't look too healthy," said Larry Bolton Jr., who made the find with his cousin James Bolton Jr. "It was pretty slow and looked kind of weak."
The pair were in Schooner Pass, next to Dolphin Island, when they saw the turtle.
As the turtle regained its strength on the dock, the Kitkatla Band Council searched for someone to help it and contacted the Vancouver Aquarium. Green sea turtles have been reported as far north as Ucluelet on the west coast of Vancouver Island, but they are generally found in warmer waters like coastal Hawaii and Mexico.
The sea turtle, named Schoona by the boys because of where it was found, was flown on Wednesday to Vancouver where it will be checked out by David Huff, the veterinarian at the aquarium.
