WINNIPEG SUN (Manitoba) 05 September 05 Bike Cops In Reptile Rescue Bid
Members of the city's police bicycle patrol unit were searching a downtown park Saturday for someone described as multicoloured, scaly and two feet long.
About 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the bike patrol officers were called to Central Park to help find a pet iguana that had escaped from its owner's suite in a high-rise apartment block on Cumberland Avenue.
"Despite the suspect's attempts to camouflage himself, observant witnesses pointed out where the suspect was hiding, which was approximately 50 feet up a tree in Central Park," said Patrol Sgt. Shelly Glover, a spokeswoman for the Winnipeg Police Service.
The iguana wouldn't come down but was eventually rescued using a ladder.
But don't expect the cops to come every time your dog hops the fence.
"When it's an animal that might cause some kind of harm to people, that's why we attend -- to ensure safety," said Glover.
The iguana was unavailable for comment yesterday.
