TELEGRAPH-JOURNAL (Saint John, New Brunswick) 25 July 06 New stamp series to feature endangered wildlife (David Williams) {Excerpts}
When Canada Post announced its 2007 stamp program back in June, it included four new stamps to be released in the spring of next year that will feature endangered wildlife.

That initial set of four 51-cent stamps, to be issued in October, will have images of the blotched tiger salamander, the blue racer snake, the swift fox and the Newfoundland martin. Together they compose an issue featuring endangered land creatures.

It will be the second time that Canada Post has featured endangered wildlife on its postage. A very attractive series, all illustrated with the art work of Robert Bateman, ran from 1978 to 1981.
Called Endangered Canadian Wildlife, there were a total of eight stamps in the series that included the eastern cougar (Scott No. 732), peregrine falcon (752), spiny soft-shelled turtle (813), bowhead whale (814), Atlantic whitefish (853), greater prairie chicken (854), Vancouver Island marmot (883) and the wood bison (884).
It will be interesting to see if any of the creatures that were classified as endangered a quarter of a century ago are still on the list and will show up again on the new stamp series.
