LINDSAY THIS WEEK (Ontario) 01 September 06 Snake in a lake prompts warning (Lance Anderson)
Police are warning the public after a large snake was spotted in Rice Lake.
Peterborough County OPP say during a recent marine investigation, officers observed a large snake swimming through a weed bed. Experts have been consulted and while a positive identification of the snake was not possible, the description indicates it's a species not native to the region.
OPP say the snake is dark in colour with a thick body, possibly in excess of three metres in length.
OPP say they've been advised that in the past, some snakes, generally constrictors that have been kept as pets, have released into the wild by their owners after growing too big.
Police say the reptile isn't a threat and will most likely stay clear of human activity.
Anyone who spots the snake is asked to call the Ministry of Natural Resources, 755-2001.
