Ball Python In Hiding

GazEmm Feb 09, 2006 09:16 AM

Hey, firstly i know ball pythons are known to be shy so i wasnt expecting to see mine out all day and night, every day and night! However, we have had our baby (hes about 4-5 months old) for 3 weeks, we gave him the first week and half without handling him but have been getting him out for around 30 mins to an hour each day since then.

He is eating fine (had 3 meals now) but apart from when he is taken out he stays in hiding CONSTANTLY. I arranged the substrate just outside his hide to see if he is coming out just not when im looking, but he is not, the substrate did not move for a few days. So basically if i dont get him out to handle he stays curled up and never comes out.

Any suggestions on how to get him used to his new viv or is it just a case of time?

Hey,
I have a ball python too. Mine is a little older. I have had her for 3 months now and never comes out. She has not eaten in 3 months either. I had another ball python that was a little younger and she came out when she was hugrey. This was in the summer time so it is possible that your python is in hibernation. What temperature are you keeping the tank at? What is the humidity at and how often are you feeding it? If you could tell me your method of feeding so I can try it too?

Hello there.

Well believe it or not a day or 2 after posting the original message he started coming out, i spotted him a few times but only durng the night.

As far as feeding goes hes eaten fine since we had him! Basically all i do is defrost the small mouse in a plastic bag in warm water until the mouse is warm to touch (was told is its too cold the snake may not take it). Then its just a case of putting the mouse down while holding the snake n slowly manouver his head towards the mouse...this is working fine for us. I did also try once dangling the mouse by tweesers infront of him and he took that also. Well thats my method, if thats not working try

Seems good advice on there. Let me know how it goes.

Gary.

Hey gary,

My snake as still not eaten yet! I have tried keeping the humidity up higher. and keepin the lights on a little longer. But I called the pet store and they told me that it should start eating around end of april early may. Which kinda sucks because I want it to eat now! O well I guess I will keep trying. Hopefully she will come out of her cooling period soon.
Thanks.

Well I've got a Ball python who I've had for 9 months, and for the first 7 He/She/It came out daily and was only trouble to feed before the irregular shedding time that She keeps. Now how ever the only time I see the little SOB is when I've put food in there.

What I want to know is very basic: She's about a year old, 4 foot in length, as thick as my wrist. How often should I feed her: and what on? She's on large mice, about every 5 days, and she makes them look like a snack.

I love her to bits but I'm a little concerned that I'm rubbish.

any help realy appriceated.
