Why can't you keep one in a 20 gallon?

Tokays get huge, and are very active. If given a small cage, they become obese, inactive, and ill.

Exactly how big do they get?

two of mine are almost 12 inches and still growing. have u ever been in a pet store that has one or more Tokays in a small tank and observe them. mine do not behave like the ones in little tanks. they become very active and do use the whole tank when put in one of proper size. the pet store Tokays seem very depressed to me, they cant move or climb which is their nature.

Yeah I have seen them in pet stores. They were about 7 inches long. Now that I have learned about that 65 gallon min thing, I think back to the time I saw them at pet zone, where they have about6 adults in a 8 gallon tank. How horrible. One or 2 of them was just laying on the floor of the tank as if waiting to die. Poor things.

I would like to say that you have to be a very ded icated person and i'd like to compliment you.

I dont think its normal for a Tokay to hide out on the ground. None of mine never have, a few hatchlings will hide under a log while small. They do come down to the floor mostly for hunting, calcium dish and just exercising. no wonder these pet store people are so afraid of them, id be a little touchy if i was kept in a room the size of a small bathroom all the time and with other people, especially other males.

They were on astroturf and there was a water dish and NOTHING else.

Thats terrible, all geckos need to hide and ones that dont have hiding places are the ones that lay on the bottom looking dead until u put your hand in there and then they want to take it off. If u dont have one but are thinking of one i def wouldnt get that one. ive kept younger Tokays in a 29 gal tall untill there about 8 inches and then its time to upgrade bigger
