Snake identification

SkipperSLO May 29, 2006 11:58 AM

Hi all!

I got a snake from a local pet store with excuse, that nobody wants to buy it becouse of its agression. It's suppouse to be a Elephe guttata. I have quite a lot of experinces with bird spiders, chameleons and ants, so I thinked to myself, it is a nice oportunity for me, as snakes are also very interesting to me.

I didn't see this snake till we arrived home. When I put it into a terarium I immediately noticed, that it is not a Elaphe guttata. As I am a student of biology (one year till graduation) I tried to identify this snake. It's actually quiet difficult, couse I can't take the snake into my hand to count scales on the head, as the snake is very agressive and I don't have the equipment to safely handle it. I don't have any other identification keys.

I think it is some colour variation of Elaphe longissima. Those snakes also live in my country (Slovenia), so it is very important, that my indentification is comfired, couse it's ilegal also for pet stores to have wildcought animals, that are on the CITES list.

If anyone have a clue, please help.

Thank you in advance
Bostjan

Hi,

The snake on the picture is a Malpolon moilensis.
