Common Kings (L. getula) are good starters, and out of the eight or so different ssp. I've heard that Easterns & Floridas are some of the best handlers. I guess people feel the Westerns (Cals, splendidas and Mexican Blacks) can have a bit of an attitude. I keep a WC Cal King (that I caught in the Santa Monica Mtns) and she's great. Also don't count out Gopher snakes when looking for a good 1st snake. Similar to Rats & Corns. I call them the corn snake of the West. Great eaters and pretty docile. Good luck.
