Cage Question

plumtreefarm Feb 02, 2004 07:34 PM

I am looking to buy a pair of Bearded Dragons.
I have a Vivarium but would like to know if it is suitable to houses Bearded Dragons in. It is an all mesh construction (plastic), here is the link
http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/acatalog/All_Mesh_Enclosures.html

The one I have is the large one and is quite big indeed although as the Beardie gets bigger I understand that a larger enclosure will be required.
It is designed for a few animals especially Chameleons as they require through air as tanks etc make the air stagnant which is bad for them.
Do you think this kind of enclosure is suitable if I have the heat and UV light at the top or sides? I did ask one lady in a shop but didn't know if she was trying to sell me a wooden viv or not so thought I would ask here.
I look forward to your reply.
Thanks Louis

Bearded dragons are desert creatures and like it HOT. The problem with mesh cages is their ability to hold heat in. A BD's cage should have 85 F ambient temp on the cool side while the surface basking temp should be 105 F. A wood enclosure does much better at retaining and mainting the proper temp gradiants.

If you are going to house two BD's together they must be two females since two males will fight possibly to the death and a male/female will constantly breed stressing out the female. Two females will not always get along either so you should always be prepared to seperate and house in individual enclosures.

Thank you for your help, much appreciated.

I shall go for the safe option and buy a proper wooden vivarium. A friend of mine has offered me a double kitchen cabinet (melamine I think) I wonder if I put sliding glass doors on would this be more suitable?

Once again your help is appreciated. I want to get it right BEFORE I buy the pet.

The kitchen cabinet sounds like a good idea if its big enough. Getting it right before you buy the lizard is an even better idea. I'm sure you'll do well.
