Tokay geckos

Kirisame Jun 27, 2004 11:34 AM

Hi,

My bearded dragons died and am thinking of getting a tokay gecko & was wondering if the setup I have would be ok.

My tank is 48"x18"x18" and I have added a bit of glass at one end to make a pool ( 14"x18"x4" ) in which I have a waterfall & stones.

The air vent at the moment is very rough mesh & has the basking lights are fixed to it through cut holes. What's best to replace the mesh with? I thought that sheet metal with small round holes, like this?

Also, what's best to use for heating? The numerous care sheets I got say that a heat lamp should be used, but how would I stop them climbing & getting burnt on them? I can't have external lights that rest on the top as I have cats & they would knock them off :/

About substrate aswell, all of the care sheets say to use potting soil & sand mixture or some kind of bark, but I had a lot of trouble with my bearded dragons with loose substrates like that, & thought that 'reptile carpet' would be good as it would hold some moisture. What do you think?

I have plenty of things for them to climb on as well so that's not a problem & will get appropriate plants when (or if) I get one.

Thanks
Ste

The size are ok for a pair.

I will suggest you to read some caresheets, that is the best way, to find out what to do with the setup.

I keep 1.1.1 tokay, 2 adults and one young male(hatched summer 2003)
