Need advice about keeping a baby beardy

darkcircuitUK Sep 20, 2005 04:13 PM

Hey all,

After speaking to someone on the American side of this forum I decided that rather than get a 48"x18"x18" tank (tank for adult) and section a section off, I would buy a small tank and upgrade once the beardy got too big for it.

Anyone know of a good starter kit avaliable in the UK? All I seem to be able to find is John Coots starter kit for a lizard and it looks far too small and to be honest pretty tacky.

Would I be better off buying all the bit seperately? (bearing in mind that once I get the full-size tank I will have to replace a lot of it with bigger stuff).

Thanks
Dave

A small tank is a good idea, as a baby beardie will have problems finding it's food in a 4ft viv, but at the end of the day, the most important things are the heating and uv lighting, so you will need a thermostat and a starter unit, which can be transferred into a larger viv, along with a higher wattage bulb or ceramic.
Personally, I would buy the larger viv, and section it off, but that's just my preference. However, on the subject of buying a starter kit, most reptile shops will set you up with everything you need for your beardie, or you can do your research, decide what you need and buy it seperately. The choice is yours.

What about making yourself something ??
I made all my vivs,, all they are is a hardboard back and side's top and bottom contiboard.....nice and easy...

I made 2 hatchling vivs last year for about £25 tops,, got a 20 watt halogen light for heat,, about £5 and a small 18 inch uv.

dirt cheap.

if not,, i personally would have 2 separate ones,, you will struggle to get the right conditions in the small one and the big one when it's opens up i would think,, ie small one too hot,, big too cold etc..
