What should Gecko poo look like

chili_con_parmi May 27, 2006 06:37 AM

HI,

I am wondering what gecko poo should look like. My Gecko's poo is black and white. Is this normal. The black and white parts or the poo are separate, like the black poo has a layer of white poo on top. I feed it crickets and an occasional wax worm.

Thanks in advance

Your gecko's poop is absolutely normal i'm pleased to say! You should find in general, that the black portion is roughly 2/3 times bigger than the white. The white portion of this excretia is your geckos wee wee! Their urine comes out this way in a smaller, white almost chalky deposit. Occasionally, if you use a calcium subsrate ie 'calci sand' then these white deposits can camouflage into the surrounding substrate. Only when you open your viv, and your met with a strong 'public urinal' smell do you know you have a sray 'piss pellet' as I call them.
If your geckos poo is really runny or obviously green in colour, then I would suggest you visit your nearest specialising vetrinary surgeon, taking with you a fecal sample for analysis. These poo's can occure during or following a stressfull period but its always best to visit the vet (with a sample of poo!) to rule out possible viral or parrisitic infection.
Remember.....the best way to avoid many problems people face with their Leo is to adopt clean husbandary practices. Not that I'm suggesting you dont already of course!

Thanks for the reply deets

I'm glad this is normal. And I also learned something new as well, didn't know their pee was like that. Its quite handy to clean. I clean the poo and pee out every day and the poo is solid so I think there are no problems. He eats a lot as well and has a nice chubby tail.

Glad to hear all is well. I saw your post from April with your decscription of your leo's thin tail. It may happen again when the tail becomes thin. If everything else seems well a slender tail can simply be a seasonal thing (like changes in outside temp affecting temp in viv) or just that your little bud is having a break from pigging out! How often do you feed him/her? I feed every other day to maintain an interest in eating. I also vary the type of crickets that I feed mine. The black cricket contains slightly more fibre and protein than regular field 'browns'. Sometimes I feed daily for 5 days then give 2 days off. Its all about making sure your firing their interest in food. Unfortunately these little fellas can suffer from anorexia, for no apparent reason or obvious illness. They just stop eating! I had one male who did this when I first started keeping leos. It was awful to see him waste away and I swore I would do all I could to prevent it happening again. Touch wood it hasn't since.
Anyway if I can do anything to help in future please ask. The best way to learn is by asking others. Dont be afraid to ask about anything.........I for one, am more than willing to offer my advice where I can, and look for a solution or answer to others.
