Mississippi map turtles, advice please

sarahb Jan 22, 2006 01:21 PM

Hi,
I am considering buying two Mississippi map turtles, I've been doing quite a lot of reading around the subject, however, there are still a few things that I'm not sure about, was wondering if anyone can help, I know that males when fully grown are quite a bit smaller than females, is it possible to tell whether a young map turtle is male or female? also can two males live together in the same tank? or are they likely to not get along?,

hope someone can help,
thanks

Hi if your new to turtles i would go for a red ear slider or yellow belly slider as they are lot easier to work with i would not put two males together at first they will be fine but when they get bigger they will be trouble get the biggest possible tank you can afford as you won't believe how quick they grow. look at getting one turtle to start with they are not lonely on there own! and will be a good start
please email me with any of your questions!

my son is now the proud owner of two mississippi map turtles he has named Squirt and Sparky(both male)

Although they seem healthy enough and have a decent appetite, the water they are in very quickly generates a small film over the top.

We have a pump/filter system as well as a heater and have changed about a quarter of the water every three weeks but the film re-appears?!

Any suggestions or advice would be gratefully appreciated

Andrew

Yes, it is possible to keep 2 males in the same tank.(i do).And you can tell that a young turtle is male because it has a longer tale than a female.
