How long before hatchlings eat?!!

jesseter Aug 09, 2003 04:34 PM

I got a little suprise Thursday night when I looked in the homemade incubator. A little leopard staring back at me. Before the night was out I had a container ready for him. The other egg didn't hatch until the next day!! The second baby is alot smaller(2" maybe) than the first(3". He or she also did not absorb all the yolk sac like big brother or sister. So will big sibling want to eat tonight? Will little sibling want to eat tonight? I got a bunch of pin head crickets and small mealworms. Would these be okay to feed? How soon before first shed? I was really hoping that they would take after Papa(he's an albino), but the look like they are going to be hets like mama. I guess the law of averages was not on my side on this clutch. There's always hope!! Oh, and by the way Mama has not laid another clutch since the one these little dudes are from. I thought they laid more than that. Should I be worried that she is egg bound?!! Thanks to all in advance.

Usually they won't eat until after their first shed, about a week. Some eat sooner though. they generally live off their yolk sac the first week, if yours did not absorb all they way she may be hungry a bit sooner.

Pinhead crix may be too small, prey has to be big enough or gecko won't go for it. Half grown mealies are good for hatchlings.

Good luck!
