Breeding CRBs....advice?

coluberking25 Jan 08, 2007 03:29 PM

I have a few questions about breeding Colombian Rainbows...

1) Jeff, I saw on your site you say they're very easy to breed. I have never bred any herp before, but would you consider them easy enough for a first time breeding project?

2) Any recommended sources that go into detail about breeding CRBs?

I'm just wondering for now, because I don't think I'll be able to breed for another few years.

Hey Scott, I guess you've gotten your temps under control...Great!

Only advice I can give you since I haven't bred CRB's is

First, get Rocky sexed, might really be Rochelle
Second. get another CRB opposite sex of Rocky(Rochelle)
Third, raise them up until both are old/large enough.

Then you can cool and breed them. I'm sure Jeff will have some details on that.

....Rocky(how about Roxanne or back to Precious if a female?) dug up that probe and I gotta stick that back under the substrate. Thanks Dave lol.

Now as to getting another CRB....any advice on how to persuade the parents? lol

Can't help you with the parents other than you should take care of the ones you have such that they forget you even have them. Stinky cages and especially anything getting loose could spell disaster to your collection.

You really need to pay attention to any significant other. My wife is a real sweetie and although they're not her thing, she's OK with me keeping them and will even help if need be.

For the probe, I've had some luck with putting the probe directly on the heat element. It will take some fine tuning to figure out what heat element temp will give you the substarte temps you want but once dialed in, you never have to worry about the snake dislodging the probe.

Well that would require me having to lift the cage(which, as you may have guessed, is very heavy now lol). This is why I have a laser temp gun on my birthday list lol.

Scott,
...I have not had any CRBs born here in many years. My website info was written many years ago. I used to try breeding my pair and they reproduced very regularly. I have not really tried to get them to breed and keep them together 24/7 365 days a year. I do remember that when they did breed they were cooled down into the high 60s at night for 5 to 8 weeks like my other Rainbow Boas. I am not sure why they are not breeding recently but I would guess it is because of their age or because I keep them together year round.
GO GATORS!!!
Jeff

Yes GO GATORS!!!! I was excited to see them win last night.

You think Brian Sharp could give me some insight if I tried contacting him? I understand that he breeds CRBs(some very nice T albinos I might add).

you should try to contact bryan hummel. i got my crb's from him, and he seems to know very well what he's doing. and he would also be a good source for a mate. my babies i got from him are absolutely terrific. my female (born 9-13-06) is right about 24" already, and when you compare her to another of her age she is not only big, but her patterning is also still very intact, and on top of it all, she is the biggest sweetheart you'll ever find. bryan's site is www.rainbowboas.com
