My chameleons don't like hornworms?

ta2smitty Jan 08, 2007 03:45 PM

I have the strangest chameleons, 3 out of 12 ate a hornworm?? I tried various sizes. The sames goes for superworms, they just don't seem to care for them. Werid thing is I know their hungry because I ran out of crix over the weekend and they haven't really eaten anything. And crix won't be in til tues. Anyone else have chameleons that just don't like worms?

Hey,

There are always chameleons that are picky eaters. Some are just more shy than others. If you are hand feeding them, that might be part of the reason why some of them won't eat. If you notice the chameleon looking at you more than the worm...well, there ya go... It just takes a knack of knowing how to get the bug to move and at the right time to get the chameleon to eat it.

You can try using very shallow feeding dishes (I use tupperwares that are 6" square and 2" high) for the superworms and for the hornworms, just place them on branches and vines in the cage.

Both my panthers seem to love them. My chams are spoiled, I rarely offer the same thing more that three days in a row, but last time I ordered hornworms I got two pods and was swamped, so I offered them for a whole week every day. They never refused them. I put them on the screen or a nearby branch in plain view of the cham. Since the hornworms don't wiggle much, they must be fairly close to catch a chams eye. Like was mentioned in a previous post though, sometimes they just don't react to certain bugs for whatever reason one day, but go crazy for them a week or two later.
