What are you listening to?

bluerosy Jan 08, 2007 04:21 PM

Just wondering what kind of music you all listen to. I can imagine Pat listens to gospel, Zenny Reggae, Discern-Disney favorites. Crimsonking- bluegrass, FR- sounds of the seasons??? I don't want to even guess what Nokturnal Tom listens to

Large variety of music - from classical to buckcherry.

My favorites though tend to be folk and 60s type stuff - Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Woodie Guthrie, the Byrds, Janis Joplin, etc.

Oh - and Rush and U2 - Rush is probably my favorite band of all time. The other bands to come out of Canada - I'm willing to forgive Canada because first, they gave us Rush :D

Damn, Bluerosy....Bleugrass???
Are you serious???
Not that the screen name would help you at all...but....
Geesh....
Actually I like most types of music at any given time, including classical. Bluegrass would be at near the bottom however....haha
Maybe just sign me..

Mark,

AL kinds of music huh?

Is bluegrass lower than Electronica or pop latino?

Actaually I figured you for a Arena Rock fan.

crimsonking Jan 08, 2007 06:04 PM

Well.. most kinds..No rap or disco though, I suppose...
Arena rock?? What exactly is that??
No matter, any music I would purchase has to include talented musicians.
Anyway, in no particular order a list might include favorites...
YES, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, ELP, Tangerine Dream, Jeff Beck, Ray Charles, Gershwin, Segovia, Horowitz,...
There's a ton.
I have to admit, lately I have enjoyed listening to stuff I would never have listened to back in the 60's... I think the industry is missing the ball if they don't revive some of the older stuff with all those great harmonies..
Hell even the Beach Boys...Something that's sorely missed these days.

bizkit421 Jan 08, 2007 06:55 PM

Allaman brothers still put on a hell of a show... saw them in Pittsburgh 3 years ago.. definatly worth the effort

crimsonking Jan 09, 2007 12:48 PM

They were much better way back when Duane was alive...
As he put it one night when Greg's voice was shot..."I cain't sing... but my guitar can!". He could be very tasteful at times with that slide....

Patton Jan 08, 2007 05:59 PM

Old school Punk, MC5, The Stooges, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, That's Smith Not Smyth! The Dead Boys, Velvet Underground.
Old school Blues, Son House, Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, no we're not related! Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, R.L. Burnside. Love the Stones, pass on most of the Beatles. In the Country section, The Carter Family, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Graham Parsons. Oh yeah, and I actually like Bluegrass! Old, from Monroe to the new stuff such as Gillian Welch. And then there's the whole grunge thing, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, The Supersuckers, Oh yeah and did I mention 60's Garage....Blah..Blah..Blah. One of the newer bands I'm into is, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs! Great question Rainer! Be careful what you ask for! LOL!

hahaha, i am listening to an old local blues band ironically enough called the kingsnakes. they toured the east coast in the 80's and 90's, and they backed up john lee hooker once or twice.

other than that , this week i am listening to guns n roses, dylan, springsteen's latest folk album, johnny cash, audioslave, metallica and a cd with frog calls. in the car i'm tuned to the classical station.

who knows what it will be next week...

I'm originally from San Francisco, but with a wife in the Army, we haven't been home for a long while. I used to go see John Lee Hooker play at his club, The BOOM BOOM Room, across the street from The Filmore in S.F. One night in '96 or '97, the Stones were rehearsing at The Filmore, and Keith Richards cruised over and sat in with John Lee Hooker and his band, needless to say I got real tore up that night!

wow, music's one of the few other things in life that has ever intruiged me as much as herps....i've at least dabbled into just about every genre at some time or another;but let's see here,a browse in the cd rack shows as follows:dexter gordon, dave brubeck, miles, art pepper......stylistics,dramatics,war,average white band.....U2,rolling stones(is it just me or did they seem juuuust a bit better,oh,30+ years ago?lol),STP,soul coughing, the wailers, burning spear,coldplay.....oukast,albert king, beach boys, beastie boys, the dead, jimi hendrix(i vote most underrated blues guitarist!)......marvin gaye, the doors, police, and last but for god's sake not least, may he rest in peace-the godfather of soul-james brown............i have to give thanks to that record store owner who was spinning '[bleep]es brew' on the day of miles' passing when i was in there shopping around-i had never heard sounds like that before-it led me to discovering the vast ocean of great american music sometimes known as 'jazz'.....whew!yeah,interesting topic.

Aaron Jan 09, 2007 09:09 PM

The one tape I have is an early demo with no title so it's probably before. I got it used at a record store and all I know is I listened to it about 50 times while night driving in the first couple months. Most of those bands I am not like totally into I just like them everytime I hear them on the radio. The artists I like enough to collect have been Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Ween and more recently Bob Dylan. When I was a kid we used to go to my grandpas house every sunday for dinner and he always had classical music playing in the backround. Alot of it I liked but don't know who it was most of the time.

waspinator421 Jan 08, 2007 11:53 PM

I like lots of kinds of music. Lately, though, I've been listening to a lot of electronic, didgeridoo, rock, and bagpipes. Brother is my favorite group right now, they use lots of didge and bagpipes in their music. Those just happen to be my two all-time favorite instruments... so it's perfect! Ondrej Smeykal is another big favorite of mine. He is phenominal on the didge!

I play the didge myself, and am learning the bagpipes. Pretty fun stuff!

Not bad Brandon!!...see they finally gave you a good vidshot in the 4th video..LOL. A couple of questions though...

#1. If I buy a snake or two from ya this year, can I get a free cd of your band?

#2. If you ever in need of a old/overweight/lip syncing band member, you'll give me a call? (looking at the "groupies" aspect of it)

Thanks,

well its about time, hahaha, i will check out the site. i have been asking around for quite a while about ken rex and other projects you might be invilved in. one of my favorite side-side-side hobbies is to collect music/cd's from people/friends i know in bands.
daveb

Brandon Osborne Jan 09, 2007 04:19 PM

Welllll, Ken Rex fizzled out due to one member's substance abuse. I personally don't see the need for it. The music itself is enough of a high for me.....but to each his own. I miss the music, but not the drama. The guys I play with now are all dedicated and above all, not full of themselves. We all enjoy the music we write together and it definatley shows in our live performances. Hopefully CDs will be ready soon......and I mean it. The Ken Rex CD never made it to press. A year and a half down the tubes. It's not the first time, but hopefully it was the last.

Thanks
Brandon

Upscale Jan 09, 2007 09:04 PM

I’ve busted my knuks mangling some classics- have you ever seen a tab for Killer Queen? Sounds so la dee dah but OMG that stuff is from outer space to me. Beatles to me is like that. I probably play stuff way more advanced and complicated than those actual guys could play, but even when you know how to play it, it just doesn’t sound as good or right. Even “Maybe I’m Amazed” is soooo simple, but took me longer than the tapping section of “Eruption”! You gotta have a Gibson SG I think, or it ain’t gonna be right!

lbrat Jan 09, 2007 11:09 AM

I find myself listening to almost anything. My fav. is and will always be Led Zep.
I can do most any classic rock and also like some Pantera,System of a down(now that's heavy)Talking heads,Alice in chains and I really like Godsmack. The list goes on and on.

daveb Jan 09, 2007 02:02 PM

that some expect your musical tastes to change or "settle down" as you get older. heck no. there is a lot of junk out there but i have to agree with you on system of a down. matter of fact i have to agree with just about everyone in this thread on their music. good stuff.
daveb

DISCERN Jan 09, 2007 06:09 PM

Yea, for me, since I have gotten older, my tastes have actually expanded. One day I can be listening to Martina Mcbride or Trisha Yearwood, then the next listening to Suffocation or Vader. Also, being a musician that looks for constant influence, you learn to be sensitive to the fact that there are great musicians in all styles of music.

Bad Company, Led Zep. The only new stuff I listen to is Greenday because my kid jams it a lot. I use to listen to every side of every Van Halen album every day and put on headphones and fall asleep listening to "the rise and fall of ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars", really loud!. Moonage Daydream is one of my favourites. Old old stuff. I just heard Van Halen is being inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame- can’t do that until they’ve been out twenty-five years! I first saw them live in 1979 the MIGHTY Van Halen back then. Now nobody in my house can stand it when I put them on. I really liked Great White, Tesla and Jake E. Lee’s band Badlands. I use to play, write, sing and record. I haven’t really been into it since little BOYS started throwing themselves at the stage! Man the front row used to smell soooo much better!

reako45 Jan 09, 2007 11:06 PM

I listen to a bit of everything (except new country & new hip hop) most of the time, esp. classic rock (Zep, Nugent, good Metallica) and old school rap. For road cruising this year I'm gettin' together a CD of road & driving @ night music (Willy Dixon, Muddy Waters, JLH some Doors) or some classical just to be quirky (Bizet, Wagner, Orsini etc.).
