Is feb. to early to go out herping in southern Ca.? When does everyone usaully start heading out?
I went to Filmore this last weekend and saw a (DOR) snake of some kind, it was 82 out there on saturday, there are fence lizards and Side bloch lizards all over the river bed along the 605 FWY, I see we have a freeze worning for this weekend but for February, if it warms back up who knows what can happen

I'm gonna get started around here (NW San Fernando Valley = Chatsworth) about mid to late February. I didn't get started til mid march last year, but saw Cal Kings, Striped Racers and a few Southern Pac. Rattlers last year. Can't wait!

it's usually pretty good. I think I've been living in the area for a little over 2 years now and didn't really get down to any serious field herping until last year. In that area I've found Cal Kings, Striped Racers, Southern Pacific Rattlers (of course) and members of the herp club (SWHS) that I belong to have found Coachwhips, Kings, Nightsnakes, a San Diego Gophersnake and a Two Striped Garter. There are times of year when there are tons of Western Toads out, Skinks, CA Slender Salamanders. I've got a few spots up there where there's AC on the ground, so I'm hoping for a herp filled Spring. It seems that the window for finding stuff under boards is relatively short cuz in the summer it gets sooo hot out here. I guess then you'd have to get out @ night or really early am. I'm trying to get Jasonmc up in the hills here. You should shoot me a message on here if you're ever out this way and wanna go field herping. there's still alot of spots I haven't explored.

I go out ther a couple times a month to get supplies at Reptile Depot, we'll have to make some of those multi-tasking trips.

Lets put a trip together?
I see you are interested in Rosy boas, I have a fried in the Riverside area that gets coastal Rosys on his ranch, there is a big rocky hill in the back, when he starts to see snakes we can go check out the hill, I'm sure that's where there coming from.

That sounds like a trip worth taking. I've finally found my big CA atlas and there are several areas of Riverside I'd like to check out. Either contact me through here or email me.

Lets go, Lets go, Lets go!
I hate winter! Cant wait to go and play hide and seek with our little friends! I removed a ball python the other day from under an apartment building across the street from CSUN. I was also supposed to go out to remove a Boa from Echo Park, but still waiting on that call!
I cant wait to go find some native stuff!
Talk to you soon reako:

You can herp Southern CA year round. I've gone maybe 5 or so times since November and found An Atrox, four Sidewinders, a Southern Pacific, a Spec, and a Pituophis. You just have to put in time and gas money.
