They look awsome! Did you use lexan, or glass?

redmoon Jan 09, 2007 11:34 PM

Looks great! Nice snakes, too. What is the white box on the right hand side for? I'm assuming just storage.

bsg915 Jan 10, 2007 12:31 AM

Actually, the white box is my favorite part of the whole thing. That houses all of the electrical components. There are master on off switches for each section, so if I get rid of an animal, I can shut down that section. Then there are dimmers for each heat lamp. Each light has it's own timer as well. And all that wrapped up in one nice little box.

Great job. Tell us more. What are they made of? Melamine or wood? If wood, what did you seal the walls and floors with?

And what glass track did you use?

It holds heat amazingly, the vents are set up in such a way that I can move cardboard around to open them or close them accordingly. I used Plexiglass for the doors because they are a little more forgiving and our cat tends to cause a lot of trouble. The track is just a couple peices of 1/4" aluminum channel with counter sunk nails in them. For the floors I used 3/4" melamine and the main carcass is just 3/4" fir plywood, nothing too fancy. The venting also keeps the humidity down to where it ought to be. I have found that the ceramic bulbs I've been experimenting with work much better for ambient temperatures as well as creating one general hot spot. The whole thing really copuldn't have come out any nicer than I could have hoped, though it seems to have consumed my living room, but isn't that always the case? This hobby tends to make you collect way mroe crap that you always want to save cause ,"What if I need it Later?"

I think you did a great job. It looks really nice. How is it holding temps for you?

Was the wood sealed? If it is sealed, sorry, just ignore the rest of my post. If you didn't seal the wood, you will probably want to consider doing that, especially if the substrate (in the 2nd pic) is moist. Over time the wood will fail if it continust to absorbs moisture. Staining thread This might help out some.

I did seal it, I don't remember what I used, I was in Olympia at my father's place. But Rest assured, it was aired out and everything was good to go before any animals were put in there.

Awesome looking enclosure !!! I hope my first one turns out as nice. And the electrical / control box on the side is very nice and organized, a great idea, I'm going to incorporate that into my new one.

Congratz on your first build !!! It makes a nice addition to your living room.
