Breeding Spengleri

schroderal Jan 10, 2007 10:53 AM

Hi,
Its that time of the year again for these two. I also caught another pair of mine in the act. Does anyone else have any spengleri breeding right now?

I hope that hussy gets pregnant. That'll show her.

Yes, mine have started courting each other. How many of these amazing animals do you own. We have 2.3 breeders, 3 2yr olds and 4 babies that we are raising up. We are getting 5.15 adults in about months time from a friend of ours. I love these turtles. They are by far my favorite. Take care and good luck with the breeding.

Hi Carl,
I currently have 2.3 adults. The attached photo is of a hatchling born late Sept. 06 from the pictured pair, that I kept. These are also my favorite turtles. The hatchling is easier to feed different food items than the adults. Are your breeder females somewhat chubby in the rear legs? I was wondering if I should restrict the adult females food intake.
Good luck with your collection.

Flub over the hind legs is a sign of lots of fat. I've seen it, as you mention, particularly in females, in many species, previously bred and not previously bred.

One of my females does have some extra weight in the hind area. You can reduce the food intake a little. These guys are prone to becoming over weight. A fat turtle is not a good one....lol
It can put stress on the animal and is definately not good for a breeding female. It's so fun to watch them eat I can see why it's easy for them to get fat. They'll eat and eat and eat. I feed them mealworms, earthworms, wax worms (occasionally), crickets, slugs, snails. I try to vary thier diet as much as possible. Crickets are nice because they get a lot of exercise running around trying to catch them.....lol Good luck with the coming breeding season. Maybe we can do a trade on babies to get some new blood lines.
