Arm waving when hunting?

tonguetied Jan 10, 2007 11:54 AM

First off all, I'm new to the beardy forum, so hello everyone!

Secondly, I have a juvenile bearded dragon (sex unknown as of yet, but I call "him" Ichabod)

Sometimes when he hunts crickets down in the terrarium he will slowly wave his arm in a forward stroke, like exaturated (sp?) swimming. He does this with both arms, one at a time. It is almost like he is trying to mesmerize the cricket...Although sometimes I think it works against him lol

These are 2 week old crickets, dusted with calcium powder, he typically only does this when there is a lone one left in the tank.

Has anyone else experienced this behavior? I know arm waving can be a submissive gesture, but this seems different...especially since he is the only beardy in the tank.

It's probably a girl and she's just practicing for mating later. lol. On a serious note. They just do it sometimes for no apparent reason.

With other dragons present the dominant male bobs his head and the submissive males and females arm wave to to show submission. I had a baby in a room by herself and she still did it sometimes.

S/He only seems to do this while stalking crickets, but who knows? Maybe its just my beardy lol...Maybe I will capture the waving on my digi cam sometime and you can see what I mean.

Believe me we all know what you mean. If you have a bunch of babies in one container and one starts, then they all do it. It's like their practicing for sychronised swimming or something. lol.
