Do Snakes Cough?

nickrondeau Jan 10, 2007 01:13 PM

I have a two year old Pueblan Milksnake and from time to time he'll make a sound that seems similar to a person sneezing or coughing. I camped out and watched him for a while and he's got the same physical characteristics - his belly poofs out for the split second and sometimes his mouth will reflect similar "symptoms" (cough or sneeze). If this makes any sense can anyone help me? Shout I have him checked out?

Thanks in advance,
NICK

Take it from me, I've been in the "snake game" many years,.and what you are describing are "classic" signs of a respiratory infection.......many experienced snake keepers usually have antibiotics(safe for snakes) on hand to combat problems like this. In conjunction, raising the cage temps. to about 84-89 degrees also helps the snake combat the infection........however, I would recommend you make a "BEE-LINE" to a qualified vet as soon as possible. Until your appt. with said vet, I would immediately raise the snakes cage temp., this will at least help the snakes "auto-immune" system keep it at bay till you see the vet.........taking swift action now will make all the difference!!!........good luck!...........Doug
