corrugated cardboard

edkim Jan 10, 2007 03:27 PM

Hey I was thinking about using corrugated cardboard, but does anyone have problems using this over belly heat? Specifically, does the heat transfer well to the top of the cardboard?

The way I have the cages setup is flexwatt under the cages and the probe of the thermostat directly one the floor of the cage to keep it a steady 88-89. If I put the cardboard over this will the 88-89 temps be present on the top surface of the cardboard?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

We use the cardboard in our large cages and place the thermostat probe on top of the cardboard and tape the cord down with wide painters tape.

It can be placed under the cardboard, but then you would need to adjust the temp setting to make up for the fact that it is warmer under the cardboard than it is on top.

Either way will work. Just depends on personal preference.

Thank you Denny. That would probably mean I would need to sacrifice one of the cages. Or do you setup the probe in one of your occupied cages? I'm thinking if I do setup the probe in an occupied cage, I would need to re-tape the probe everytime I clean that cage.

Thanks again for your help!

If you put the probe on top of the cardboard, then you need to change the tape when changing the liner in that cage. It is not that big a deal though and does not slow you down too much!

I do it the exact same way as Denny. The corrugated cardboard I use has grooves and the probe fits in them perfect. I put tape over it and the boas never even know it's there. It's not a big hassle either. Here's a quick pic to give an example.

(Pardon that white stuff, I've got a female in this cage who shakes her tail everywhere and leaves this stuff behind)

I have a stack of boaphile cages with the probe under one of the cages and right up against the heat tape. So I never have to move the probe. A ranco thermostat is set at 93 degrees in a fairly cool room and all the cages are right around 85 degrees on the warm sides. Jeff told me to set it up this way and it works perfect.
