Light Bulbs

chuckdawg Jan 10, 2007 06:31 PM

Greetings,
I recently bought some new bulbs for backups in case the current one burns out. My question is if these bulbs will actually output any heat sources for him to bask in. Here are the stastics and information of the bulbs.

PHILIPS DURAMAX 200W SOFT WHITE
LIGHT OUTPUT: 3300 LUMENS
ENERGY USED: 200 WATTS
LIFE: 1500 HOURS

PHILIPS 150W DURAMAX SOFT WHITE
LIGHT OUTPUT: 2310 LUMENS
ENERGY USED: 150 WATTS
LIFE: 2000 HOURS

I apologize about if this question is rather dumb to ask, but I was told housebulbs with high Wattage would be good enough considering they told me the ones sold at the Pet Store are no different except in higher prices and has a picture of a Reptile on it. Please let me know if these will be any good at all. I'm just rather curious because I've usually stuck with Tight Beams and want to try the regular bulbs instead. If I wasted money, it's ok with me, lol. I just want to know if these bulbs will even do anything for the Dragon.
40 Breeder Tank, btw, I do know the wattages are quite high for such a tank, again my house does get quite cold when we are away during the day time during winter, I'm going to 60-100 Watts, when summer hits.
Thank you!

Sincerly,
Chuckdawg & Rufio

I used a regular household light bulb 100 watt in a pinch and it seemed to heat up the basking area better than the more expensive Infrared bulb I have now.

So maybe the regular bulbs will work just fine for a longer period of time!

The regular bulbs are fine. I don't know what your setup is though. I have combination hoods and use regular (incandecent)bulbs under it to provide the background temperature. But, I also use a spot light bulb to provide a hotter basking site.

A word about the 200 watt bulb. First of all I think it's too bright and will bother their eyes. (my opinion) You will also find it is very fragile, if you bump it at all it will burn out. Lastly, most of the clamp lamps, or hooded sockets are only rated for 150 max. so be careluf with that.

Better to use 2 bulbs. I use a 150 and a 100 to heat my 4 x 2 x 17"H tanks and then a 50W Zoo Med Spot.
