How much to feed

Ninja_Tortoise Aug 09, 2003 06:28 PM

My boxie just ate like 15 superworms...is that too many? I kept giving, she kept eating. I figure she'd stop when she's full. They're not like goldfish who eat till they die right?
thanks,
-Me

Mine tend to stop when they're full: I do have one that's a big eater and can eat twice as much as the others and she hasn't popped yet.

goldfish do not eat until they die. They eat until they produce so much ammonia in their feces it suffoctes them. Feed you box turtle all that it wants, as it is getting closer to hibernation.

I wouldn't overfeed like that. I had a female RES once that overstuffed and not thinking I just kept feeding her more superworms. Eventually she puked them all up, making a huge mess, and wouldnt eat them for a long time.

A reasonable meal is good, overfeeding a turtle is bad. Building up fat and a full belly inside a restricted space (the shell) means other organs lose room, so things like lungs cannot inflate fully, etc. These guys are driven to gorge themselves when the opportunity presents itself as a survival tactic. Allowing it very rarely is okay, but it's not really necessary in captivity, so I'd recommend feeding reasonably.
