natesreptiles Jan 11, 2007 06:26 AM

Any one ever heard of these or know where to get them?

You bet!

I got an '05 male from Jeff Hartwig:

http://jeffhartwig.com/Reptiles%20Main.htm

He's the only guy I know of that's had any real success breeding them in the US, but I know of at least 2 others that are trying REAL hard!

Jeff is a great guy, and NICE animals!

I've found and met at least 2 others that have siblings of my olive, including one that I keep in touch with who has a 1.1 pair... Obviously, it'll be several years before they're ready to go, though.

I have a pair of 6 year olds that I am watching breed as I type this, so I have my fingers crossed. I can feel folicles in my female, so I will keep everyone posted. They are truely awesome snakes, I love them!! Very gentle and trustworthy(mine are any way). And the SHine is amazine too.
Hey Todd, Momma Water is developing folicles again also....and my boy has been at it for a few weeks now...we'll see???

Sweeeet!

Crossing all my fingers for ya, man!!!

Jasin is one of the guys I was talking about when I mentioned 'others with breeding pairs of olives', and another excellent source if they happen this year.

I just got a pair of '06 Fuscus from him a couple months ago, and he's one of the 'good guys' in the business for sure! He's extremely knowledgeable, and is MEGA-passionate about his animals!

I did hear back from Jeff Hartwig- he said he picked up a second breeding pair of olives last summer, and he's witnessed copulations by both pairs!

Soooo, this may be a GREAT year for the olives- they are without a doubt, one of the coolest snakes around!!!

I have seen Jeff's stuff online. I think that the Barkers also breed them, and Bob Clark, too. We got the pair pictured in a trade about 2 years ago. They are VPI stock. We witnessed breeding last year, but got no eggs. We have seen a LOT of action this year, and I think that the girl is actually gravid right now, so we'll see in a couple of months!

I haven't seen any action yet, but my female ovulated very late last year...like March. Since they haven't shown any interest so far, I'm going to add the smaller male into the mix (wearing gloves and keeping a good eye on them) in case there's some nasty combat. Males are 8&10', female is also 10', about 25lbs. Males are much thinner.
Mine are out of VPI, also.

When I had my olives, I witnessed copulation often and even what I thought was ovulation, but never saw any eggs. The female was pretty chunky when I got her and after talking to Dave Barker, I learned that fat girls rarely produced anything. I put her on a 'diet' of sorts in hopes to slim her down and get her prepared for breeding, but still nothing. And, as a few of you already know, I ended up selling the pair (still much to my regret!!). I haven't heard anything from the gentleman who bought them, but if he reads this, I'd be very curious to hear how they are doing.

Olives are definitely a species that captured my attention and I *will* have them again soon. Prehistoric, had I the cash to spare, I would've gone ahead and picked up that pair by now. Oh well, never have it when it's actually "necessary" eh?

An old pic for memory's sake...

That's pretty reasonable....cheap, actually. I got mine in early 04 ass 6'ers (one was smaller) and the trio was $800.

They've gone up since then....

Hah, well what can I say? I regret that sale almost more than any other herp I've sold. I will have them again, I just can't dish out the $1500 right now to get those particular animals. They pop up from time to time though, so one day. Thanks a ton for the heads up though.

Well man, it looks like this time, it might've paid off despite my pessimism. After staring at that ad for a little while, then going back to it a few times... (hah)...I decided what the hell. I just purchased the trio, and Tom knocked off a bit more without me even asking! They should arrive at my airport Wednesday evening. If you can't tell, I'm pretty excited

Jaykis, Tom was telling me someone with a reverse trio was getting a lone female from him to make two pairs. Was that you? He was asking me if it was but he was using a real name and I don't know yours.
