When do they come out?

lilypad42 Jan 11, 2007 07:39 AM

Hi everyone!
Seems kind of quiet around here, so I figured it was time to ask yet another hibernation question What state do you all live in and when do your turtles come out of hibernation? Also, what kind of boxies are you hibernating? I figured it would be interesting to compare the months that all of our turtles go into and come out of hibernating. Thanks a lot!

Here in Minneapolis, our 5 three-toed box turtles hibernate in the relative warmth of the refrigerator. Starting usually sometime in December, they go in for 4 months, with about 3 opportunities (every 4 weeks) to wake up, soak and drink.

Here in central VA, my Easterns typically start coming up in late March through early April: it varies a little from year to year.

I don't hibernate my pair. But here in jersey in the wild I have spotted my first box in the first week of May the last two years. They may be up earlier but there in the full swing of things by end of april-beg of may. I find that boxies are one of the last reptiles to come out of hibernation here in new jersey.

I only have the one who's outside hibernating, 2 years in a row he's gone underground during the 3rd week of Oct. This past spring he emerged on St. Patrick's Day, March 17 so I'll be looking for him at that same time this year.
For years I've noticed that by the end of Oct. I don't see them in the wild anymore. In the spring I don't see many if any wild ones until a good rain happens & some years it doesn't rain very much.

I have to agree with on the rain. This past spring I remember I was hiking with a friend and I was suprised that I didn't see any boxies yet. It was mid april and the weather was nice but we had no rain to that point. First week of May we got some heavy rains and all a sudden boxies were out all over the place...good point.

Thank you to everyone who replied. I was wondering when I should start looking for Daisy to come out. Her previous owner said she usually goes under in early November and comes out in June. June seemed a little late to me, but I guess we'll see. maybe she is just a really deep sleeper
