what is the difference between granites and marbles? I thought marbles were co-dom and granites were recessive, but after talking to a breeder recently, i have been pointed towards thinking they are the same thing, as i was told some genes in bornoes are just "random" so to speak...

The original term "marble" was coined by Keith McPeek in 1997 (per his site) I believe from his line of co-dominent animals. Check out his site for details at http://www.thebloodline.net/short.html

The animals I have are definitely "granites" though I thought "marbles" until I heard the genetics base for each. Since some of my animals are VPI lineage and they refer to theirs as "granite" or "speckled-sided" I deferred to the more accurate representation preferring "granite". They are different in pattern more on the back of the animal than anything, but selective breeding may enhance this some. I also notice that some of the "normal" offspring have characteristics that may indicate a visible marker for "het". It is too early for me to say what but I am trying to confirm this. Ask me again in a few years for a confident answer.

Funny how we are talking about borneo morphs when there aren't enough borneos produced out there to begin with. The ball python market sure created an interesting ripple effect.

The first marbles were produced from a marble animal, the first granites were produced from a normal animal. Recently I've heard some of the people who have been breeding marbles for years saying that it really is recessive as they've gotten normal clutches from marble to marble. I can't really go into that as I haven't personally bred any (yet).

These babies were from not what I would call normal, but non marbled/granite parents. There were four babies out of nine with this high granite appearance. With similar numbers from the pair last season. So this is definately genetic, and it is definately recessive. I believe there is alot more going on with Jasins animals aside from the granite and striped appearance there showing.

The term marble was actually used to describe the light brown and yellow swirl marks that they have on theyre backs, not the speckled sides. I have a male from Mcpeek, when i bought him we discussed the genetics, I was told that it is co-dom, breeding my male marble to a normal borneo would produce marbles, in not sure if theres a ratio of offspring that would possess this gene or they all would carry it, and i have no proof, but this is what i was told.

Mom and I purchased a w/c pair of Borneos From Regis O In 93 or 94..The
male was very light and lacked black pigment..The female was a very gold animal and also lacked black pigment But had more of it..The pair was bred in 94 and in 95
one male granite was hatched..Cool..They were bred again in 95..
In 96 2.3 more granites were hatched..If marble is the gold color bleed in the pattern then it was present in the granites hatched in 95 and 6..But I have seen some wild marbling that was not present at that Time..
