Easy Question to Answer

fauxsanity Jan 11, 2007 09:00 PM

Guess it's time some of us simpleminded readers that don't know too much about locality/ hypo/ het etc.(Good reading though) to to post..LOL. What did you name your snake? (and why?) I know you big breeders couldn't name all your kings but I bet you named a few. Don't need them all, just a few. I'll start, with my measely 4 (with another MBK coming in march) (courtesy of Dobry)(wink).

Blackie..MBK (sigh) I know,I know..My eight year old name it, but it's fitting

Cruiser..b/w banded cali he cruises his tank, cool looking animal when it's moving

heyzeus..brooksi I've explained her..will probably post about her again this christmas, and the next, and the next..LOL

Romeo..brooksi he has a little heart shape on his head, thought I'd have to rename him "tag" but I was faster...LMAO

Hawkeye..MBK story to come in march..(grin)

I've had 3 since 2004, 1 since 2000 - I didn't seriously get back into herps until this year (I had a lot as a teen).

Next year, I'm getting a bunch more cali kings - I want some locality stripers (the brown and yellow kind, like from San Diego), some of Rick Staubs davis stock (not for the sake of the local, I want to make a lavender hypomelanistic), and I want some So GA easterns and maybe some brooksi but I might wait until 2008 to get brooksi.

I also plan to catch some Redding locality Pacific Gophers. Since I can legally sell their offspring and they often breed easily same week as collected (if not already gravid when collected), it would give me something to offer next year other than just Cal Kings.

Last year I found a nice 5 foor DOR pacific gopher. Gorgeous pink belly.

I tend to name my snakes from norse mythology, partly because I am half norwegian and also because I just like the names. My male MBK LOki, is named after the norse god of mischief and chaos, My female MBK is named after the norse goddess freya, Goddess of Love and Fertility. My male brooksi is named after the Norse god Odin, He was the father of all gods and Lord of War, Death and Knowledge. My feamle Brooksi is named after Greek god, because I did not like any of the other norse goddess's names! lol! anyways her name is Aphrodite, and she is the greek goddess of love, desire and beauty. Now my two pacman frogs have really randome names. They are Chubb's and Tubb's! Well thats all the names of my reptiles.

Here is a pic of Chubb's giving a smile during his dinner!

Joshua-Hi white cal king
Barnabas-Albino nelson
Colonel Sanders-Sanderson blairs grayband
Samuel-Sinaloan milk
Bailey-Burlington Co. northern pine
Eyon-Red cape gopher
Grace-Tx. bullsnake

DISCERN Jan 12, 2007 12:29 PM

Yeah!!
I usually just refer to him as the Colonel, but yeah, that is his full name. He is from Sanderson Co. so Cl. Sanders ( of KCF fame ) was the first name I thought of..yeah..dumb but it's cool at the same time.

I need to quit letting my friends name my pets...
obviously, theres Spot, who I talk about none stop...

Fluffy - female red belly piranha that I've had over 4 years
Sniper - male quarter horse with a screw loose
and I haven't named my brooksi yet... gotta met him and let him name himself...

chrish Jan 12, 2007 11:15 PM

Let's see...

Male Black Milk = male gaigeae
Female Black Milk = female gaigeae
female Loxocemus = loxocemus
male Pantherophis bairdi = male bairdi
female P. bairdi = female bairdi
etc.
getting the pattern?

Actually, I have 1.2 Eryx johnii. The two females are about the same size, so I do separate them by "name" on my data sheet. One is normal female while the other is "speckled" female, so in that case, I guess I did name my snake.

I used to name my snakes years ago, but finally got to where I couldn't keep up with it. The wild caught ones have catalog numbers, but otherwise they are just snakes.

I don't post her often, but I read the posts a lot. I get a lot of good info here. We name all of our snakes. If we just numbered them, I'd never remember who was who. I copied this from a list that I keep for myself, but the original's in pink and blue so I know at a glance what I've got. Then at breeding time, I can pair them up easily without forgetting anyone.
