Humid Hide Materials

Graniteer Jan 11, 2007 09:56 PM

After reading about the different substrates for humid hides, it made me start to question my own. I used aquarium silicon glue to attach rocks together to form a cave, and I use a sponge to provide humidity. I clean the sponge off by microwaving it to kill bacteria and fungi. What's the general consensus on this? The geckos can't eat it or anything like that.

FYI, microwaving will not sterilize anything. You can minimize growth on sponge by vigorous boiling over a period of time (I think it is like 10mins required, I'd have to look it up) you need to have lots of water movement in and out or using bleach or similar. Then you have to be sure to clean the sponge throughly if you are bleaching it.

IMHO, lose the sponge, it is just asking for disease, stick to something you can throw away. I like papertowels, but anything disposable is better.

I agree. Loose the sponge. Paper towels work fine. Personally I use the green peat moss. I find it doesn't dry out as quick. What ever you use, something disposable is more efficient.
