Cage Wizzard disinfectant ?

balls4all Jan 12, 2007 01:04 AM

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this product.
I have been using it for a few weeks . Its fairly expensive but a fellow breeder recommnded it and it seems to be a good product.

ive been reading a lot of posts recently on cage disinfectants, and would like to offer my opinion. i use very hot water, with a VERY small amount of antibacterial dish soap, and VERY hot water to rinse. my thinking is that if these animals are kept in a sterile environment, they become more succeptable to illness. let their immune systems get some practice. in the wild they dont have disinfectants to flush their burrows, and rely on their natural defences to keep them well. if kept at optimal temps, humidity etc. they will be just fine. ive kept reptiles for twenty years (ALL kinds) and have never experianced a problem with illness. just use hot water and a drop of dish soap.

Joe, I'm inclined to agree with you on this. Although I DO use a little bleach, I think complete sterile conditions weaken the immune system. Let em play in the dirt now and then, fer cryin' out loud

I understand your opinion but my concern is this.........
Even though I am very picky about the conditions of my tubs, daily checks and cleanout when needed, your going to get a certain amount of fecal matter and urates in the tub. In the wild a ball does not lay in his bathroom so to speak. Im just trying to reduce the chances of bacterial growth in a confined space. Thanks for the reply and good luck this season!

not knowing for sure, i would think that in the wild a ball could and would sleep it its bathroom, or maybe someone elses. proper, vacant burrows cant be that easy to find. if bp 1 didnt crap in there another bp, or some other animal, surely did. im all for clean cages, but not to the point of wageing chemical warfare. good luck to you too.

LOL - you are right - balls do their business in side their hides in the wild - and they lay in others wastes as well. I remember watching that Ball in the Wild video (sorry I forget the proper name for it) and the trappers were saying they could usually smell a ball burrow before they could see it.

Tosha, they track African Rocks the same way. That being said, I think if you spot clean when necessary and do a good clean when the odor gets to YOU it's probably good enough . I do agree that clean is good, just not STERILE clean. But, to each his own. JMHO
