Rubbermaid for GTP

snakeguyy200 Jan 12, 2007 12:35 PM

I'm building one of the rubbermaid tub setups from Greg Maxwell's site for a small GTP. In his directions he advises to use fiberglass under the mesh metal instead of plexiglass, but everywhere I have gone to buy fiberglass like that doesn't know what I'm talking about, and they advise to use plexiglass because it will not melt. Any suggestions on what else I can do or use to keep the snake from rubbing it's nose raw on the mesh metal?

I haven't seen the instructions you're referring to, but perhaps Greg suggests using fiberglass SCREEN underneath the metal screening? Fiberglass screen is the softer stuff that is used most nowadays for window screen material, and would help prevent a nose rub.

Of course it's not very strong, which is why having metal screen or mesh behind it might work.... the fiberglass screen on the inside where the snake would be able to touch it, and the fiberglass would prevent the snake from grating its nose on the metal grid on the outside.

This may not be what you're looking for... let me see if I can find the instructions.

Ah! you're right. It is fiberglass window screen. Are those pretty easy to come by?

Should be right next to the roll of metal window screen in the window section of your local hardware store. Very easy to come by.

I was able to find what I needed to build a rubbermaid viv. I got some ideas from a friend to make the perches out of PVC pipe, which I like the idea, but as I'm building, I'm noticing that the perches might be a little big for a 3 gallon tub. I'm planning on getting a 4month -1 yr old GTP, and I'm told 3 gallon tubs are the perfect size, so I don't know if it would be better to get a bigger tub and the 1/2 in PVC perches, or if I should design a different type perch to use in the 3 gallon tub. Any suggestions?
