I just got my first Leopard Gecko.

PastelDream Jan 12, 2007 02:29 PM

OK, I've read the books and as much info online as I can. I have the cage set up properly. There's a warm end and cooler end. I use a cermaic heat emitter for basking, but I also have an under the tank heater on half of the cage. I have a humidity box with a damp paper towel in there. There's a hide on the cool end and one on the warm end. I feed live crickets and mealworms. I make sure the insects have a healthy diet before I offer them. My little guy/gal is eating just fine, but I'm a bit confuse about calicum and vitamin supplements.

I have herptivite for the vitamins and rep-cal calicum w/D3 to dust the crickets. I've read that you need to give them these two suppliments. I've also read you need to give them a small dish of calicum to eat if they want to. I've also read that calicum w/D3 isn't what they're suppose to get. Now, I'm waiting for my calicum w/o D3 to arrive. I want to have that on hand in case that's the one it needs.

So do they need the D3 with the calicum or not?? I read it both ways and I'm a bit confused.

My little Gecko is very active and fiesty, so it's doing alright. I just want to make sure it continues to do fine and lives a long healthy life.

My advice, take the assured route and buy a complete and balanced vitamin formula intended for Leopard geckos. In my opinion, I'd rather just take the guess work out of balancing the "right" amount for geckos. We were recommended T-Rex's leopard gecko dust for both our leos and our cresties when we obtained our little crested last spring. We have had much success using it for both since then. (Before that we just used a balanced any herp vitamin and calcium blend.)

There is an almost constant discussion on this board about what is right and what is not. It really comes down to how much time you have to research, buy, and blend your own formula. For me, I've read the boxes and the info online. Leo blends are much easier and basically foolproof, I trust them more than I trust my own time and patience. (And this is from me, the person who has moved to strict organic food for the crickets and the forum's main proponent of UV light because both have offered visible the changes in our geckos that are extreme.) They can be both dusted and dished, but I would suggest dusting for sure. Good luck and happy geckoing!

Yes, I believe it has the pink bottle top? We started using it last March when it was recommended as a feeder insect dust for our new baby crested. Before we used a standard vitamin mix. I admit to not have researched this product as well as some, but I did do a ton of research about another of their products, Crested Gecko Diet, and was very impressed. They seem to evaluate the complete care of the animal, not just "oh it needs calcium"... something like taking herbal supplements in addition to a multivitamin. I have seen some users report that LGD brightens the colors of the gecko, I really haven't noticed, our little one is so bright anyways. I don't think you can really go wrong with it, but as with all supplements, watch the shelf life.
