Hypos vs. Caramels

Chance Jan 12, 2007 06:11 PM

A post a little ways down brought something back into my mind that I hadn't thought much about lately. What is the difference between a hypomelanistic (aka ghost) ball and a T albino (aka caramel) ball? Both have a reduction in melanin, but not a total lack. Does the difference stem from a different display of melanophores in the scales? Or is it something else?

This is something that's always bugged me about the "albino" bloods. To me, they appear more similar to hypomelanistic than T albino, but again, what's the difference anyway?!

I appreciate any input.

I don't think that anybody knows more than that they look different. Learning more would require looking at skin samples under a microscope just as a beginning. If anyone has even done that, it hasn't appeared on these forums.

hypos have normal eyes. Caramels have dark red eyes due to albinism. Beyond that, a crap caramel does look an awful lot like a nice hypo.
