THE REPORTER (Fond du Lac, Wisconsin) 09 January 07 Ordinance would ban wild, exotic animals (Aubrey Fleischer)
Mayville: An ordinance that would ban possession of wild and exotic animals was introduced Monday night to the Mayville Common Council.
The ordinance, which was first introduced a number of months ago at a Public Safety Committee meeting, is being proposed in response to a family that planned to move to Mayville with a type of African animal, said City Clerk Kathy Wild. The proposed ordinance is scheduled to be voted on by the Common Council next month.
Animals that would be banned include poisonous reptiles, insects and arachnids, venomous snakes, constrictor snakes, snakes exceeding 4 feet in length, monitor lizards, non-human primates, bears, crocodiles, alligators, coyotes, elephants, gamecocks and other fighting birds, bats, hippopotamuses, several wild feline species, wolves, prairie dogs and offspring of domestic animal bred with wild animals.
City residents who already possess wild or exotic animals will be exempt from the ordinance if they register the animal with the City Clerk's Office within 60 days of the ordinance's effective date. Other businesses or organizations, including veterinary clinics and licensed animal rehabilitation homes, also will be able to possess the animals if they are properly registered.
Specific rules regarding housing such animals are provided in the ordinance. The animals must be photographed and microchipped for identification.
