Mexican Tiger Ratsnake

Nir Jan 13, 2007 11:23 AM

Hi,

I am corrently working with Spilotes pullatus pullatus and am checking the surroundings to see if someone is breeding nice mexicans. Me and some friends would be trilled to find some nice CBB hatchlings, yearlings, adults this season or next season.

Come on! Those who work with those beauties, show yourselves!

these aren't mexicans but they are nice & yellow. i'll be breeding them shortly. the male is an 03 & near 9', the unrelated female is an 04 & about 7'.

Hey Dan, awesome animals and I always enjoy seeing pics or them! I think seeing pics of your Tigers is one of the factors that got me sooo interested in them. Please post breeding info when you pair them up this season. There seems to precious little info on captive breeding of these guys out there. I am hoping to breed them as well in a few years.

Hey Billy, nice snake I was just wondering where in florida the picture is taken? I have spent a lot of time in St Augustine and the surrounding areas and in looks a lot like the scene in your picture. Just wondering? Jack

Hi Jack. I really like St. Augustine and for the last two years, my wife and I have done our yearly "get-away" there. Just a really cool town. I am in southern Palm Beach County though, Boynton Beach to be exact.

btw, the mexican sub is somewhat difficult to acquire i understand as they cannot be imported though some may be out there. i have seen pics of them & they are 'the best of show' spilotes. dick bartlett wrote a fine article on them, complete w/ the mexican sub pics in the august 2000 reptile magazine [pg. 32]. it's worth looking up if you're interested in this regal serpent..... btw, i'm re-doing the males entire giant enclosure today as he's gotten too large for the branches & keeps breaking them. wish me luck as he'll be in there w/ me while i'm working! don't know how he's gonna react to this intrusion....:>/

Thanks Dan, and good luck with that project. Is your male very territorial? Also, if you don't mind, post up some pics of his enclosure after the makeover.

i wouldn't say he's territorial, he just barely ever been handled & is somewhat of an unknown. his cage is in a high traffic area & rises to within inches of the ceiling & that's where he hangs most of the time watching the going's on down below. he does know when feeding time is though & will slowly approach me then. i didn't complete his cage yesterday [ended up watching football] but i will today & post better pics. here's a grainy one taken last year on a friend's cell phone. it's roughly 6' x 6' x 2' wide & at that size, i shouldn't have to move him again.......

Yeah, I know they are scarce on the market. It's ashame, like you said, they are the perfect Spilotes for display. Although, I do love my S. p. pullatus!

I do remember however seeing someone post pics of a mexican here in the indigo forum. Wish I could find some CBB specimens...

Anyhow, if someone has some, please e-mail me!

I believe Bill Reid and Don Bordner are about the only two private breeders working with Spilotes pullatus mexicanus, though there might be one or two others, and I don't believe they have plans to cut any offspring lose in the near future, but one may ask!

Thanks Jeff for the info! Great to know there is at least some private breeders working with them!

If I may ask, what kind of stuff do you do at the University of Arkansas? I am an Ecology student here at Sherbrooke University.
