looks awsome! did you get your plants from blackjungle? what are you going to put in there? galacs might work, i know they like the water more than most. how big is it?it's kind of hard to tell.

johnnymo Jan 19, 2007 03:47 PM

yea i got my plants from black jungle and saurian. Patrick sent me some really nice bromeliads. I was orignally going to get a surinam cobalt but i am going to go with two imitators instead. Now i just have to work on thumbnail proofing the tank. I wish i would have known i was going to get imitators before i went tank shopping....i wouldnt have bought the exo terra. but oh well, im just going to silicone the cracks and tape the door gaps. but anyway the tank is 18x18x18 inches.i just added java moss to the spot in the middle where its just coco bedding so im hoping it will thrive their.

my lighting i think i have to redo. everyone keeps recomending lights of america. but im having trouble shoping on the online site. i dont know whats good and what not haha.i want a new 15 inche florescent. mine is ok but it could be alot better.

otis07 Jan 19, 2007 03:52 PM

i did the same thing, but mines the ten gallon exo-terra. i have two imitators in it now. for all the gaps i just shoved spanish and sheet moss in them. and i put clear tape on the door gaps, this seems to work fine. i am just using a florescent with a bulb from home depot and all the plants are doing great, so are the frogs. good luck and please feel free to contact me at otis07_@hotmail.com if you have any more questions!

That's a beautiful little imitator, Otis. Mine originated from Patrick's stock (2 lines), too.

One caution however, about shoving moss into the cracks rather than sealing them. These little guys can burrow right through it. (Sad, first hand experience with this happening.)

i should have made myself more clear, the places i shoved them into wern't leading to anywhere they could get stuck. just areas that i didn't want them going in because then i couldn't see them. thanks though. i'm sorry about your frog.

Hey, yourself, AJ. Nice photo site you have. I do remember you.

Come back and lurk some more. We need all the help we can get here. Have you been doing any "frogging?"

lol, i probably should stay away from lurking, that leads to a big hole in my pocket, but I already got that :P

whats the other board every one posts on? dendroboard.com? i could never remember the exact name..

No, i havent been doing any 'frogging' lately. Sadly, i had those 3 Blue Sipaliwini tincs, had them nearly a year, then one of them just stopped eating and died... then, about 4 months later the other did the very same thing. then i had the third for over two years and i dont know what happened but he died as well.. =/

But i ended up just getting rid of my vivarium. the tank had a leak in it too. ew. but i started thinking about darts and i want to start another vivarium. just a vivarium, then darts later. but i dont have the money for it. well... i do... but im buying some other high dollar (hunting) items.

thanks for compliment on my picture site. i still got some of my vivarium pictures on there, but they are on the second page.

but in other 'frog news'. lol... i had frog legs for the first time ever last night, and they litteraly taste like chicken. lol.

Whenever i do make another vivarium, i want to get a Cube Aquarium and have a water feature, like your bow front aquarium i think it is,, or one of your many set-ups. lol.

but, i think ill lurk here more often. Maybe post every now and then.

i miss my darts lol if i remember right that was Orion.

I'm really sorry about losing your tincs. I had something like that happen once with some terribilis, and the only thing we could figure out was possible heat stress during an unusually hot spell with the tank in a position where it was getting sun through the skylights mid day. They acted much like yours, just stopped eating one after the other, got very skinny, wasted, and died, even after the situation was corrected. There were no parasites that I could find with my stereoscope, either in the feces or when I did a necropsy. The stereoscope is limited to 40 power, but one can usually see cysts, ova and unicellular organisms with it. This is about the only reason I regret that I am retired from the laboratory. The other group is still doing just fine. It's certainly discouraging when this happens. Fortunately, it was an isolated incident, and many of my frogs are going on 8 years old or more now. I hope this hasn't totally discouraged you.

I think a terrarium is beautiful, even without frogs. You have a lot of freedom to try different plants and experiment without worrying about disturbing the frogs when you make changes or try something you are unsure will work out.

No, im not totally discouraged i was then. I just threw the entire tank away, and sold all my fruit fly culturing supplies. I wish i hadn't now cause ill get back into it someday.

I might have gotten back into it right now, but im buying a new shotgun ($700) then buying all the tools and stuff to work on my bows myself, thats gonna be a nice little penny too. then next year im gonna buy anew $700 bow, lol. so, i already got my money planned out for the next year.

i dont know, i might look at those cube aquariums, if i just got that, the other stuff wouldnt cost so much. just the aquarium and lighting is the main cost. the other stuff isnt that bad.

anyy wayyyys. whats the other dart BBs every one posts on?

i wish i knew where i saw it, i remember seeing a picture of a cube vivarium that was awesome. i thought it was on here but mysearching isnt successfull. i saved a picture of it, but i geuss it got whipped off last time i had my hard drive erased.

pattttty. i shouldnt have came back here.... im looking in the photo gallery, and i see a 10 galon verticle. ANd i got a 10 gallon in the garage. and it would be very cheap to make a vivarium out of it. lol. or just a normal vivairum out of it.

i havea question, i think i want a water feature, you have some tanks with water features. i dont want like a water fall. and im worried about maintenance being too much.do you have to have a pump to keep the water circulating? i would liek to avoid that. but if you dont, then will the water just get stagnet and smelly and get algea?

lol.

if i do a 10 gallon verticle, i guess i cant have a pair of tincs, but would need like D. auratus or d galactonotus. or i could just have a normal 10 gallon and get a pair of azureus.

it would be better to just start cheap again. but now i really want back in, lol.

AJ: I have Rio pumps (600) in all my waterways for circulation, whether it is over falls or just bubbling up from rocks like a spring. But you can certainly do without them with a drainage area and if you are willing to sump out and replace the water occasionally. The only problem I've ever found with not circulating the water throughout the waterway completely is a build up of a rather obnoxious scum of what I think is Aspergillus sp. -a common black fungus one finds in old houses around leaking toilets and faucets. It's not stinky and doesn't hurt the frogs, but is just rather unsightly.

I sent you an e-mail to the old address I had for you with some information you requested, but it was returned.
