help getting new beardie!

BeardedDragon357 Aug 09, 2003 08:20 PM

i was curious like if there was a difference with male or females i have heard that males hvae better color and females can sometimes lay infertile eggs and if you don't give her a spot to lay egs she will get impacted and die so as of what i know i am leaning towards a male but i would like to hear your opinion seeing that most of you own beardies
and also if females do lay infertile eggs is there a way of knowing etc..
i also bought a 100 gallon reptarium that measures 48" long 30" deep and 17" high i was wondering what i should do for lighting and what brands of uva/uvb lights?
thanx

Depends on what your goals are and/or projects. If you are just looking for a pet with no other intentions, get a male. I say male because normally they are cheaper, and yes you won't have to worry about any egg issues down the road. It is possible a female will develop eggs and need to lay them without being introduced to a male. You'll be fine getting a female as well, but there are little things to watch for such as aggressive feeding, scratching, and plumpness. If the eggs are infertile though, often times you can't tell by outward signs of eggs.

I don't think a repitarium is the best choice for a dragon. They are all screen and will not hold heat properly for your dragon and will be quite drafty. I would think a solid cage would be better for him/her. Maybe somebody else on here that uses the screen cages can offer their advice, but I wouldn't use it.

You need a UVB source such as ReptiSun 5.0 and a heat bulb of any kind as long as it provides the proper level of heat. We use normal house bulbs for heat there is no reason to waste the money on "reptile" bulbs unless you buy the night bulbs for certain species which do work well.
