whites and mice....

blueackie Jan 13, 2007 08:14 PM

hi everyone i had a few questions about feeding mice to whites frogs. I am not new to this, I have kept them for a long time and i research often. I have a trio of whites, and they seem to love Hopper and adult mice! even my little male tries to eat small adults. My biggest female has had big ones many times, with no problems whatsoever. I would prefer to use hoppers and adults as variations in diet over pinkies, due to pinkie's high fat content. Do you ever feed yours older mice such as these? What are the diets you use for them? I was curious because all the caresheets say to feed pinkies, but mine like adults more. Thanks!

I feed my dumpy a mix of nightcrawlers, mealworms, crickets, superworms (all dusted with calcium D3) and a few sticks of Reptomin. He takes the Reptomin sticks from my fingers (along with the fingers up to the 2nd knuckle!)

I've never fed him a pinky or any form of mouse. Although I often feed him by hand, he gets stimulation by hunting his food. I wouldn't allow him in an enclosure with a live mouse - too risky.

I feed him bugs instead of mice because it allows him to have smaller, more easily digested meals. And maybe lower fat levels - although I haven't studied that too closely. I guess it all depends on how many calories you are stuffing.

I guess he's not too fat, although one poster thought he was grotesquely obese.

haha that's a cute looking frog. I wouldn't say grotesquely obese, but you should maybe lay off the superworms and mealworms for a little while. (try butterworms, they have less fat in them then crickets and are higher in calcium).

As for the mice, pinkies would be an occasionnal treat, say once every couple of months. Stick with the bugs unless you want to drastically shorten your frogs lifespan. I know in the wild they eat other things then bugs, but they also have much larger territories than in captivity and can work off what they eat more readily. It's just not possible for them to get the same amount of activity in a tank, especially if the food is hand fed. There is nothing that motivates the frog beyond "when is the next hand coming?"

Do grey tree frogs eat mice? Mine are fat anyway so I probably wouldn't do it, but I have never seen mice listed as an option for them. Just curious.
