Collasped eye in boa, help please..

crestednation Jan 13, 2007 08:35 PM

Hello All,
Just last night I noticed that my 8 month old albino boa male's right eyeball has a huge "dent" in it; it appears to have collasped inwards. He has been doing just fine, acting normally, eating, his temp gradients are just fine, his last shed was normal, he is on cypress mulch and appears to be otherwise normal. The eye is not swollen at all, just appears to have fallen in..I have looked everywhere for snake eye problems and have only gotten results for retained eye caps. I am planning on taking him to my vet on Monday, but I wanted to get everyone's opinion on what it could possibly be and what I could do in the meantime.
Thank you all in advance for any help you can provide,
Nicole Corder.

If the eye is just "dented" this is most likely a depression in the spectacle. Usually these are not an issue - the underlying cornea is undamaged - and resolve at the next shed. If the "dent" is massive there could be trauma to the cornea, although this is fairly rare without a laceration to the spectacle. Send me a photo

hey,

I would check the humidty in the enclosure.Depending on where you live it may be to low because of artificial heating or the use of heat lamps. If you can get it up to 70% and keep it that way then the spectical will go to normal. My boa fluffy would do that to me alot. I would try this befor I went to the vet because you will get there and he will just say increase humidity. good luck, need more information e-mail mcexotics@gmail.com

Hello,
I do not have a photo readily available, although I it is not a massive indent and I do live in Arizona and have had problems with keeping the humidity in this cage before. I will attempt to greatly increase the humidity over the next few days and keep everyone updated. I am still waiting on my new enclosure from boaphile, can't wait for it to get here!
Thanks to everyone for your help!,
Nicole Corder.

Hi how are you...I will tell you right now i bet 100% its a eye cap! What you can do for this is get a warm towel/cloth and put it on its eye. What this will do is let oisture in! Watevr you do DO NOT RUB THE EYE, as this can make them go blind because are hands are to acitic and rough and will pel the outer skin of the eye with the eye cap! When you goto the vet akk he will do is take a piece of scotch tape or maybe a tweezer and it will slide right off, i ask you not to try takin it off yourself if your not experinced!!!! ps my red tal boas always happen to its pretty commom especially if its not humid or not misted in a shedding period!!!!

will take care of it...I had this same problem happen with my boas as well as ball pythons.

Now that I use plastic cages it is a lot easier to keep the humidity at a 'boa' level.
