Weird White Spots on my RES's shell...

Red_Ear_Lover Jan 13, 2007 10:50 PM

My Little red ear slider has some white spots on his shell that intensify and look silver when he submerges in the water. He also has a female companion, they get along great! They touch their little noses and wiggle their hands in front of each other! I also notice some spots on her, but not nearly as much as the male. Now. They have their own little ramp with suction cups so you can stick 'em to the wall. They can go up the ramp and let their shells to dry. Now, they can't bask, because the place where their tank is, sunshine doesn't come through, and besides, I don't have a UVB/UVA light. So what I do, every morning I put them in a deep, empty, ice cream container, and expose them to sunshine for about 20 to 30 minutes. Sunshine only hits the container in specific locations, so they also have some nice shade. I also take the time to give em fruit and veggies, like papaya, banana, tomatoes and occasionally lettuce. So they pretty much have everything they need. I was just wondering about the white dots. Thanks in advance!

Do the spots look anything at all like this?

Are you asking what is that in the photo?
It's a RES with SCUD that I babysat last August.
It's owner waited waaaay too long to seek treatment but when he finally did the RES did get better.. the owner's map turtle who was in way worse shape did not survive.

Hmm... I don't know if that's the more developed version or what, but my RES has white round spots. Not blots...

It's probably air trapped under the plates (scutes) of the shell. That's why you really notice it when the turtle is submerged. Redears flake their old scutes off as they grow larger, and as old scutes begin to separate from those underneath, air (and sometimes algae) can get trapped in between.
