I seem to recall a woman who posted awhile back here about learning she had some salmonella and was worried she got it from one of her reptiles. It turned out she contracted it from her cat. This just shows that you can get salmonella from anything if you don't practice proper hygiene, both with yourself and your environment. I wash my hands every time I handle my bearded dragon and my mice just to make sure I am not getting anything harmful on my hands.
Education is what we have to resort to inorder to prevent unlawful and inapropriate bans on animals. Alot of banning has occured due to the Monkey Pox disease carried by rats that were transferred to prairie dogs then to humans. Now alot of people assume all exotics carry this disease (which really isn't all that deadly, not like other ailments humans can get).
Most nasty things that happen is due to the irresponsibility of the owner and the uneducated. It's just people who go out and buy something yet have no clue about what they are buying and how to proper care for it. I don't just mean people buying reptiles or other exotic pets but your common pets as well, like dogs. There are so many people who have dogs but have little if no control over it, give it up or worse because the cute little puppy is suddenly 200 pounds 6 months later. All this because they were impulse buyers. They bought something they thought was cute without realizing a Siberian Husky is not a lapdog for a tiny little one bedroom apartment.
There are no dangerous pets, just stupid and uneducated pet owners. SUre some animals are a bit prone to bite but most times they bite for two simple reasons: they think you are food or are defending themselves.
