Yellows

BillyBoy Jan 14, 2007 07:20 AM

Here are some shots I took yesterday of my big male (5 foot range) and two of his offspring from this summer. The babies are now about 4.5 months old and starting to color up. You can see the differences in shade between the two with one being really light like his dad and the other being darker. The parents are both WC from south Florida. Enjoy and post up pics or YOUR yellows!

Nice animals and I agree about the intergrade thing. Mine look very similar to yours and have red and black tongues. My female has matured to a bit more of an orange color with slightly darker stripes than my male. The babies look they are going to run the gamut between light pale yellow with very pale stripes to dark and orangey with darker stripes.

The first yellow rat I ever caught was at a place called Faith Farm in Ft. Lauderdale, right inside one of their buildings, when I was like ten years old. If you know the area, there's canals and an area just west we called Bradley Field, which is now a park you can see from I-95. I caught some very beautiful orange everglades rats there that looked completely different from the yellow rat I caught in the building nearby. They were plentiful around the Palm Aire development in Pompano back then, I caught a huge one in the road trying to eat a road kill bird! I often wondered if the yellow rat was actually transplanted from up north (Faith Farm use to get all kinds of donations for their thrift store operation) but your post says you caught yours in south Florida? Other than that one yellow, I have never caught a yellow rat in south Florida. Where did yours come from?

Cool story about the yellow in Faith Farm. Unfortunately, there aren't many (any?) in the eastern parts of South Florida anymore. I'm not positive of the exact locale for my adult pair, but the guy I got them from said they were collected in western Broward County. They range very south even down to the very tip of the peninsula but mostly in less developed areas, unlike our suburban corn snakes.

Wow!!!!,......I would bet $1,000 that I know you and went to school with you!!. I lived in Lauderdale Manors since 1966, and went to Laud..Manors Elementary school . I used to go "snake hunting in Bradley all the time. I've had MANY snakes all my life, and brought Indigos to Mrs.Childers third grade class(1968) for "show and tell"........ I drove through that area with a friend of mine (A. Hamel)recently to look at our old child-hood homes, and were QUITE sickened at the shape of the neighborhood and what it has become!!!. anyway, I used to catch many yellows and corns(we only called them Red Rats back then) from that area, and the largest yellow I had was a solid 7-1/2 ft. My collection has been "down-sized" drastically recently due to necessity, but in the mid-nineties, had hundreds of adult/juv. snakes(not counting hatchlings). Anyway, look forward to your response!!.............................D. Mong PS,....here are just a couple pics of what I have now....

Hey, if you lived in a house just north of the school I’ve been in your room before! I remember some kid there had some aquariums with a few snakes, including a three foot indigo, was that you? I’m 46 now and this was back when I was going to Everglades middle in sixth grade I think. I hunted Bradley Field the first time with my buddy Paul Stone. This was before I-95 was completed through Sunrise blvd and there was some great xeric scrub with palmettos to hunt in along the railroad tracks. I use to hunt in Easterlin Park then too, and that was where my friend Devon Dartnell found a baby indigo in a pepsi can. Hey, this bringing back any memories for ya or what? I know there couldn’t have been too many of us around back then. It will be funny if it turns out we knew the same people. I actually reconnected with a best friend from back then in my apartment. He was Manuel back then (He lived on the road just east of the school- where our bus stop was), and now was going by Manny and I never made the connection. Then we got to talking and discovered who we really were, it was a real hoot to realize we were old best friends.

You remember Dealys Aquarium? It was on Wilton drive just south of Sunrise Blvd? Not sure on the spelling- we just called it "Dealy's" but that guy had anacondas and all kinds of exotics- I think it was actually called Dealy's Exotic Aquarium or something like that. I virtually owe alot of my early hobby to that guy! If you know that area, I'm sure you probably bought something there!

Man!!!,....that WAS ME you were talking about living north of the school!!!(end of 15Ct.at corner),I'm 46 also, and went to "Everglades" too!.......this is just too unbelievable!!!, I went snake hunting with Paul Stone all the time, I remember we caught 4 young Coachwhips out at Bradley that later became Indigo food!. I also went to Easterlin Park very often to hunt snakes. I'm almost positive I know Manny also, but I can't remember his last name...(he was ALWAYS joking).Wow!!!!...you mentioned if I remembered a pet store called "Dealy's,.....are you KIDDING!!!!!I went there all the friggin' time!!I think the guy that ran the shop with the beard was named "Barry", I bought all kinds of stuff there!! this is like stepping into the "wayback machine" from the cartoons!!!......anyway, I emailed you a message, from "clicking" on your user name, before I read this post of yours.....please email me back........Doug
