Confused about buying hots in Daytona

marksherps Aug 09, 2003 08:52 PM

I'm a little confused about the rules of buying at the show. I live in Pa and I'm flying down there. I do not have a venomous permit for Fla. I'd like to buy a few cobras from different people and get them shipped together. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks!

Mark,
You MAY purchase the snakes you want and have them shipped back. But you CANNOT transport them through Florida without a Florida Venomous License. I cant wait for the show!

Thanks Joe. I don't want to have to pay shipping from 2 or 3 different venders and I imagine no one will want to be responsible for other peoples animals?

But for the unfortunate Florida state regulations, I would definitely be attending this show. As an out of stater, however, I would have to ship any animals back that I might purchase. I am reluctant to ship reptiles even during the best of weather conditions, but my nearest airport (SAT) has been running 100F for several days in a row. No way!

Also, I was under the impression that most airlines had implemented a ban on the shipment of animals of any sort during the warmest months. Has this changed?

When i call to schedule snake shipments, they check the forecasted temps at the departure, destination and any connection airports in between during the times the shipment will be in route. As long as the snakes arrive at a time (say noon) when the temp is below 85F (even if its 84F, then goes to 90F later in the day)....they will allow the shipment.

I usually try to ship on a 8AM flight to get the snakes to their destination by noon.

Just as luck would have it, we're gonna hit the 90s here in the Northeast when I have to ship stuff.

I wonder if other carriers are applying similar guidelines. Even so, the number of hours below 85F here in S. Texas would be a very narrow window indeed!

Yes...last summer I had to hold a pair of Bothrops asper for the San Antonio zoo from May until September because the temps were never acceptable. Even when I had a narrow window in the Northeast, Texas was always in the 90s.

Good luck
