Babies are hatching!!!

squillaci7 Jan 14, 2007 10:22 AM

My first ever clutch of panthers are hatching!!! They have been incubating for a little over 200 days . Only 1 egg died in that time. So I now currently have 28 healthy eggs. Well as of around Tuesday I started getting a bit of "sweating" on one egg and before I knew one egg turned into well over half. Then eggs started cracking and little heads poking out, so currently, as I am writing this, I have one baby out and in the cage, 9 eggs cracked and another 8-10 sweating. The babies father is from BlueBeast Reptiles' Anubis Jr. and the mother is from Screameleons' Brendan so needless to say they are going to be screamers. Such success so far for my first clutch so I guess I did my research. I'm real excited!!! Wish me luck.

Thats just awesome, real happy to hear the lil ones are coming into the world, LOL nothing like watching them hatch,

They sure should be screamers from those two breeders. The guy in the pic is stunning !

As of tonight I now have four babies out and in their home and 11 eggs that have all cracked with the babies resting a bit until they decide to come out. Earlier this afternoon I was peaking in and one had just its head out of the shell. Its eyes were opened and when it saw me it literally ran out of the egg to get away from me...it was pretty cute.

Now I have 13 little ones and I keep having to come up with more cages. I guess I should have been a bit more ready but I wasn't expecting them for another month. I'll get some pics up within the next few days!

Ok so as I previsouly stated she orginally laid 29 eggs and 1 died back Dec so that left me with 28. Well over the past few days I have had many hatch and I amcurrently up to 20 babies, 4 cracked eggs with babies resting before stepping out and 4 others all "sweating" looking like I might have a 100% hatch rate. Not to sound too conceded but I think I did damn well considering this is my first clutch. Just with lots of research and a decent bit of money invested I have had tremendous success. One piece of advice is that instead of the usual seperating of the eggs (how most people incubate reptile eggs) I had read a few success stories of people grouping their eggs together in one clump in the incubation medium. Well, looks like those few reports were right and all of them have hatched or are showing signs of hatching with several days of each other! One quick question for those who have raised babies. I have not seen them feed on the fruit flies and it's hard for me to tell if they are eating them because many flies are dead and some find ways to escape (crafty little buggers). So should I just not worry and keep feeding them or try something else? Also, for their hydration I have just been spraying them several times a day, is this adequate? Thanks for your help!

Congratulations on a good hatch rate!

You could try pinhead crickets. I have always used them with baby chameleons....and you can count the "left-overs" easier than fruit flies.

Why do you think the fruit flies are dying?

squillaci7 Jan 17, 2007 07:27 PM

I'm not sure why they are dying. I put in some fruit for them so hopefully it will help. I ordered 1000 pinhead crickets from lllreptile the other day and they should arrive either tomorrow or Fri. Thanks for the input and for the record I now have 25!!!

Three to go?

squillaci7 Jan 18, 2007 08:22 AM

Yeah, only three left. One egg is cracked with the baby resting and the other two are sweating, so not too much longer now. Once I get these guys out of the incubator I am going to slow down the development of her second clutch which was laid about 46 days after the first by lowering the incubation temperature. She laid 34 eggs in the second clutch, all of which are still bright white and I need to have her first clutch well started and possibly sold before the second clutch hatches!!! I am going to go to my local reptile show and local pet store once they get around 2-3 months old...closer to 3 months.

Congrats on your success. I know how exciting the first clutch is!

I watered mine 3-4 times a day. I fed my babies 5- 6 times a day on fruit flies, very tiny mealworms (I raise them myself)recently hatched silkworms, and pin-heads. After a couple months I added baby kingworms, baby wood sows, baby stick insects. I figured the more variety the better.

If there's any chance of you selling to someone in Victoria, BC, CANADA, let me know as I'd love a male of that colour.
