Found this in the pool

BDKesling Jan 14, 2007 04:39 PM

Okay, we have unseasonably warm weather, but the pool is still pretty cold. I don't know if this is a water snake, or land snake that fell in the pool. Looks like what we used to call a simple garden snake, but I'd like to have something more specific.
Thanks,
Brian

It's a Brown or Ruogh Earth Snake.

Although the Rough Earth Snake(Virginia valeriae) might at first glance resemble the Common Brown Snake(Storeria dekayi) to many, there are quite a number of differences between the two.....You might want to do an "image search" on "Google" as there will be many examples of each,.......and although both species of snakes are variable, after doing so, I think you will agree that the photos in the original post is that of (Storeria dekayi).................................Doug

Yeah its a "brown snake" which isn't a water snake. They eat worms and snails. Also stay really small, probably won't get much bigger than it is.

Storeria or Virginia, you say? Oh, there's a trick. Head scales. Storeria lacks the loreal scale, Virginia lacks the preoculars.

Not that we can make out the scales in the photo or anything. Just thought you might like to know.

BTW, as others said, that's S. dekayi.
