The Way My Mind Works

fauxsanity Jan 14, 2007 04:56 PM

The longer I'm into this hobby, the more I find myself obsessed with the different aspects of it, case in point...

Just a while ago on the Fox News Network.( my wife has it on all the time) There was a commercial for the "Tator Glove" it's a pair of dishwashing gloves with something on the palm that when you rub your potatoes, they peel. (brilliant!) The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw it was, "shed helper gloves". Put them on and allow your snake to crawl around and help with shedding.(my mind works that way)..LOL

The problem was, I couldn't find my "hobby" credit card and I just used it the other day. I searched all over my desk..no card..then I saw my wife's purse and remembered she went to the store earlier. Thinking she grabbed the card, I went into her purse/no man's land. LOL

How do you women find anything in your purse?!!! I found gum wrappers, make up, scissors, (scissors! who needs a pair of scissors when they go out in public?) a flashlight, etc. no credit card. As I'm rifeling through her purse, my wife comes out and asks, "What are you looking for dear?"(or something to that effect)(rolling eyes) and so I explained to her the "tator glove" and how it'd be great for making mashed potatoes.

Now I don't know if it's because the only mashed potatoes I make come in a box, or we reptile keepers are just that transparent but her eyes narrowed, and she asked, " What are you buying those snakes now?" so I came clean, told her about the "shed helper gloves", and she walked over to my desk and opened the top drawer and handed me my card...walking away without another word.(shaking her head as she went)

The urge to buy the "tator glove" was over by then..(it probably wasn't that good of an idea anyway)..LOL. but for making mashed potatoes..BRILLIANT!! (unless you use the boxed ones)..LMAO.. it just goes to show ya..that we reptile keepers think outside the box most of the time. Take care

Been there! I find myself stashing those cardboard toilet paper rolls for mouse hides, I buy baby wipes (best thing for wiping up Sterilite grooves and corners), cotton balls for extra mouse nest material, vanilla extract for mouse water, disposable paper bowls for cheap hides, I have a spatula I use to scoop up hatchlings instead of trying to pick them up with my club-like fingers (my tip of the new year!), there are so many things we herpers do, I recall seeing a list of "You might be a herper if..." It was a hoot, maybe somebody has that saved somewhere and could repost it. You are not alone, and you're lucky your wife is cool about it!

I'm with you on the toilet paper rolls. I cut them in half length wise, so they make two half circle hides for my newborn kings and milks. They're cheap and disposable.

And I forgot to say that I use baby wipes to clean almost everything, herp related or not. LOL!

I'm still on the Lego kick for hides for Spot... they clean up easy and you can make all kinds of neat stuff for the snake to explore... plus, they have sharp enough edges to aid with shedding...

Vanilla Extract for mouse water?
whats that all about?

Toyota85 Jan 14, 2007 10:35 PM

The vanilla extract helps lessen the smell of their pee. Seems to work to a certain extent! I like to use cereal box's and what not for hides, shreeded paper instead of aspen and etc.

interesting... I use carefresh pet beddin for the mice and the snake... so i dont notice much of an oder from the mice at all... but i'll keep the vanilla in mind

Patton Jan 14, 2007 10:36 PM

One of the biggest problems with breeding your own mice is the smell, which comes from their VERY strong urin. A few drops of vanilla in their drinking water helps eliminate the problem.

yeah, like i said, with the bedding i use, I havent noticed a smell at all... if i did, they'd be gone... i hate rodents...
but with the carefresh stuff, the only time i notice a smell is when im cleanin the cage

Great pic of the axanthic BTW.

make great hide boxes! I use cheap ashtrays from WalMart as water dishes for my juvenile snakes. Seems like everything has its uses.

Take a hydrogen peroxide bottle (the dark kind), cut off each end and cut straight down the middle. Now you have two open ended hides. My hatchling box turtles are using those, and my baby brooksi are using the ends of saltine cracker boxes. We definately have a different way of thinking. Wouldn't have it any other way, though.

I'll bet ya all a nickel, the first time you saw that ad..you thought, "shed helper" also..LOL. And if you haven't seen it yet..you'll think of "that" whenever you do see it.(wink)(small nod)..RFLMAO
