That's funny. I wonder all the strange contraptions people have used in place of a snake hook in an emergency.

Last summer I was hiking around looking for snakes and started thinking about a monopod with a detachable snake hook. You could flip, wrangle, then use it for camera support.

Not a bad idea...it would mean less crap to carry. New project!

My most unlikely "snake hook" was a tennis racket.

Jimmy Forester and I were out one night and decided to due some unplanned herping. After an hour or so of driving we stopped at a spot with lots of AC where we had previously caught WDB, copperheads and corals. We didn't have any hooks, so he pulled two tennis rackets out of his trunk.

Several minutes later, a police car pulled up behind where our car was parked, turned on their lights and started spotlighting the area we were in. I called out and walked out toward them with my tennis racket. Jimmy was further out and had not been spotted yet. The cops just looked at me and my racket and asked what the **** I was doing. Before I could think of an acceptable answer, Jimmy strolled out and with a slow underhand swing asked "tennis anyone". For a second, I didn't know if they were going to shoot or laugh.

After a few minutes of tense then friendly chatting, they wished us luck and drove off.

I once used a paint roller handle (with roller cover removed but with the right angled piece of metal still in place). It had been coveniently dumped in the pile of trash I was flipping.

I've had the same idea the past few times I went to the tropics. I take my walking stick, which doubles as a monopod, and will sometimes manipulate snakes with the walking stick, but I really need a hook at the end of it. I'm starting to think that I may try to make my own and see what happens.
