Heartbroken

wanderinglost Jan 15, 2007 02:46 AM

Well, I am so mad at myself right now, and more particularly, ashamed. When I got home from work tonight I found grace dead in her cage. As I said before, before her escape she was seemingly doing fine. She had just shed, all in one piece so her humidity was in order. She was eating one f/t fuzzy mouse weeklyas well as drinking, and bathing. I temp gunned her cage several times weekly. It was 82 in the warmest spot, and 72 in the coolest, with a fair gradient in between. She was alert and active, and a joy to be around. She was by far my favorite reptile. The only thing I can think of that killed her was that she came in contact with something harmful on her adventure throughout my room. A few days prior to her escape I was dusting in my room perhaps she came in contact with some left over pledge that I had not thoroughly wiped up. Maybe there was something else that she came in contact with that harmed her. I have no idea. All I know is the anger that I previously felt at myself has come back ten fold. I think it will be awhile before I try my luck with another snake, but if you all will still have me, I will still check out the forum. I love reading about all of your endevours, and seeing your pics. I would like to end this by saying, Grace, I am sorry I let you down.
Thanks,
Dustin

Dustin,
I am so sorry to her that. Take this time to mourn for her and please do not stop visiting the forum. Where else are you gonna see beautiful snakes like these, certainly not any other forums here on ks. After this breeding season you should consider getting another one, their beauty and colors under light are so vibrant they are magnificent and it would be a decision that wouldn't be regretted.

...that reminds me of a little survey I took among my herp friends. I asked them which was prettier, a GTP or BRB, and they ALL said GTP!!! I think they gotta be on something lol.

Scott,
I love the look of the GTP's and the tree boas, they have beautiful colors when they are young- I personally love the maroon. The four facts that I don't like about them are the long teeth (for birds), bad temperment, finicky feeders and they all turn green (I think), other than that I would have one haha, lol.

So sorry to hear that. Don't be too discouraged, I lost my own first pair of BRB's to a heating accident not long after I got them. Take time and keep in touch.

Sorry man. It really sucks that you had to joint two clubs this week. But the fact of the matter is, this is something else that has happened to all of us as well. She was a very pretty snake.

I'm really sorry for your loss. As already mentioned, it has happened to most of us. The only upside to this is it will make you a better keeper. Don't be put off by this; there are alot of captive born snakes out there looking for a good home.

that's so sad! I know that I would be devastated if my little rainbow died... but just think, you'll be that much more experienced for when you try your hand at snakes again!

BRB_Russ Jan 15, 2007 02:22 PM

The bottom line is that just because you felt enough for your snake to be hurt about the loss makes you a better pet owner then more then half the people that own snakes in the world. It would be a travestly if you didnt get back on the horse and get yourself another snake.

We need more good herpers in the world.

goodluck

I'm sorry about your loss. I know the feeling. My inexperience as a snake owner cost me too. It didn't stop me though. I went from colubrids to boa's to pythons. Just hang in there. We're all with you.

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss Dustin. At least now you will gain experience that will help you become a better snake keeper in the hopefully-not-too-distant future.

Dustin,
....All of us who have been keeping snakes very long have made mistakes and killed a snake. When I first got into snakes it was rare to keep one alive for more than a couple years. Through trial and error, lots of errors actually, we learned what it takes to keep them healthy in captivity but we still do make mistakes. Don't beat yourself up over this.
